Description: This is a wonderful art deco period pottery ginger jar made by Carlton Ware of England in the “Tendrillon” pattern. This pattern was designed by Violet Elmer for Carlton Ware. At the Carlton Ware factory, Violet Elmer, along with Enoch Boulton, designed some of the most gorgeous art deco patterns produced by the British ceramics industry. She was originally a painter, but was offered a job at Carlton Ware by Cuthbert Wiltshaw after he showed interest in purchasing some of her paintings. She started at Carlton Ware in 1928 and became Chief Designer in 1929. She is responsible for some of Carlton Ware’s most desirable patterns, including Bell, Fairy, Anemone, Sketching Bird, Persian Garden, Fantasia and the famous Red Devil pattern. She is only now being recognized as an important figure in the transition to art deco design within the British pottery industry, which was a little late in adapting to the changing design aesthetic of the 1920s. The ginger jar is marked “Carlton Ware Made in England Trade Mark” on the underside and hand inscribed with the pattern number 3858. The piece is decorated in gold and dropped out white against black in a design that looks to me to be a bird amongst leaves and berries, perhaps more obvious on the lid of the piece. The design is quite clever with the bird somewhat camouFlaged due the integration of colors between the bird and foliage around it. This Tendrillon pattern was introduced in 1934 and was a bit of a departure from the more ornate enameled wares being produced by Carlton Ware at the time, but retains elements of geometric art deco design - it has a sophistication to it reminiscent of Hollywood Regency design. The piece is in very good condition with the exception of a few small scratches in the black background in a few places, very minor, and a bit of wear to the gold band at the top of the jar - otherwise, there are no chips, cracks or repairs and the piece displays very well. The jar is a good size, measuring 12 1/2” in height, with a diameter of about 8” at its widest, and weighs 1.8 kilos (4 lbs).
