Rare! Original, Vintage Knoll Eero Saarinen Womb Sofa with Knoll Label. Excellent Condition!
This is a rare opportunity to purchase a vintage collectible, hard-to-find, Eero Saarinen Womb Sofa (Settee)manufactured by Knoll in the 1960s. According to Fine Art & Home Curator Brittany Gersh:The stickers applied to Knoll furniture pieces are a helpful tool in determining the date and authenticity of a particular piece. In the late ‘40s and early ‘50s Knoll occupied showrooms on Madison Avenue. After 1961 Knoll’s offices were located at 320 Park Ave., and in 1970 they moved to 745 Fifth Ave. “The logo evolved over the years,” says Gersh, “so we look to ensure that the logo is correct for the time period of the piece and that the address matches.”
Knoll Labels
The sofa is in beautiful condition and completely original with original upholstery, chrome legs and feet; no re-chroming, nothing new. It has its original Knoll label and could possibly be considered museum quality since it is all original. There is NOT a bit of damage to the upholstery, legs or anywhere. The chrome legs are perfect and so are the feet. The cushions are soft; however, the foam on the frame has hardened as is typical with vintage Knoll furniture.The photos in this ad are the Womb Sofa for sale. It has been in storage for more than 40 years and has seen extremely light use after it was purchased. The original, untouched upholstery is dark brown/black (more brown than black).The photos are of the settee after it was taken out of storage and placed for photos. It is in an unoccupied guest house and is now under a blanket and not being sat on.If you think you might find one at an sale house like Wright, Treadway Galleries, Leslie Hindman, or Christies -- check their sale sites for current and past sales; original Womb Settees rarely come up for sale.
