The San Francisco Committee of Vigilance was formed in 1851, the catalyst for formation was the criminality of the Sydney Ducks,[1] it was revived in 1856 in response to rampant crime and corruption in the municipal government of San Francisco, California. The need for extralegal intervention was apparent with the explosive population growth following the discovery of gold in 1848. The small town of about 900 individuals grew to a booming city of over 200,000 very rapidly.[2] This overwhelming growth in population made it nearly impossible for the previously established law enforcement to regulate any longer which resulted in the organization of vigilantes.
Fox Stamp was a legitimate badge company, however they didn\'t produce the old west brass badges that are so often seen here on , at swap meets and flea markets.
The hallmark on the fantasy brass badges will often include the outline of a fox.
These badges were produced by International Engineering in Wilmington California from the 70s through the 90s for the collector market, and wholesaled at around $1.00 and retailed from 3 to 5 dollars. Most will bear some highly collectible title like Texas Ranger or San Francisco Vigilante.
