The iconic and famous Animated Mickey Mouse Golden Starburst watch made by luxury watchmakers Seiko for the Walt Disney Company in 1987, which was over 30 years ago!
This was sold as a mens watch in 1987
Seiko, a watchmaker famed for its luxury models and innovative collections were one of the originators to come up with this now iconic Starburst design. Seiko with its roots in Japan, took a lot of inspiration from their namesake and from their national rising sun Flag which, for those well versed in their travel will recognise, has the sunrays emanuating from a red circle in the middle.
The watch took a similar design, and instead has the sun rays emanating from Mickeys body symbolising Mickey Mouse being the centre of the Walt Disney Universe. The Walt Disney Company were so enamoured by the design it immediately made this the Flagship item of the Disney World in 1986. The first, and only time, they made a watch the Flagship item across all its company line
The brilliance of the design didn\'t end there. The entire watch body, including case and surround is gold plated. This includes the watch bracelet which has the Seiko insignia and also the links themselves.
Every other individual sun ray on the dial is textured differently, giving an incredible sheen and glow to the watch when it is viewed at a different angle. Hence the starburst name, truly is a burst of light each time. Mickey Mouse character on the watch face is the one most of us are familiar with. He is the 90s incarnation and is considered the modern day Mickey Mouse.
Mickey Mouse is fully animated, he moves his hands to tell the hour and minutes.
The dial was the world walt disney written across the bottom section, and also has SEIKO written on the 9 o\'clock position.
It has a fully functioning date and day window which is extremely useful
Please keep in mind though, this is a bone fide collectors item. It is not a childs toy nor made for children. It is a collectors item that be worn as an every day watch or for special occasions. It is a historic piece of American culture, and a key piece of the Walt Disney History - and you get to own it!
These watches tend to go for over £250-300 on sale. I am the only person selling it on so this doesnt come around often!
Initially these watches went on for sale at $350. It was a hefty price tag but it didn\'t deter the punters. Thanks to Walt Disneys enamouration with the watch, it was available across the United States in 1987. This was one of the most attractive watches of its time, and certainly considered by most if not all collectors to be a MUST have in any Disneyana collection, and most quality watch collectors.
