Beautiful, vintage, rare wedding skirt/ wrapper made by the Dogon in Mali. Piece has 9 deep blue, almost black, indigo dyed, cotton hand woven strips with faint stripes in them, sewn together and hand embroidered with colorful yarn designs. Each of the pieces I bought have different abstract symbols on them but don’t know what they all mean, but this one does have a hand and an animal image as well as what I think are butterflies.
Excellent condition; no damage that I can see; 33” x 58”;All the works I will be listing arehard to find, older indigo textiles in very good conditon, with the old dyed striped patterns, and some in the old stitch and resist patterns as well. All were used and are soft from wear and washing.I was lucky to have“first choice” of three tubs of indigos as they arrived directly from Africa, and have MANY I will be listing. I picked ones that were in the best condition, and/or the most unique, but there are almost always a few flaws, which I will note in my listings and photographs.This piece came from the last group I saw and my African friend told me he had never found textiles like the rare wedding pieces I bought.
