Rare and charmingceladon carved jade bird with uplifted beak and handsome, large eyes withoriginal drilled holes in its back obviously for ceremonial purposes or use forgood fortune, energy, and virility. A genuine artifact from our collection weare disassembling due to our retirement. It is 2” tall.

Of allaspects of the Neolithic cultures in Eastern China, the use of jade made themost lasting contribution to Chinese civilization. Stones that were fashionedinto ornaments and tools were chosen for their beauty, hardness, and strength. The tools had to withstand impact during use but the strength of all Neolithicjades is especially tremendous and dense as revealed by their heavy weight.

Many ofthese ancient artifacts came from stones in the Eastern provinces of Jiangsu and Zhejiang, especially in the areas near Lake Tai, where the stonesoccurred naturally. They are specially prevalent during the last Neolithicphase, the Liangzhu, which flourished in the second half of the third millenniumBC.

True artifacts,of which this is one, were made of jade with astonishing precision and caresince jade of this hardness and density especially is too hard to carve withanything as simple as a knife; it was abraded with coarse sands in a processthat took long times of labor. These technical feats required the highest levelof skill and patience. Rarely do the jades in archeological excavation showsigns of wear. Their designs are superb artistry and the tools were wellconstructed for use.

It is tobe understood that jade is to this day and always was considered to be the mostfortunate of all gemstones by the Chinese. Therefore it was placed carefullyaround the bodies of the dead to ensure their travels as they passed on. Jade throughthe centuries is worn, collected, and revered for the good fortune it imparts.Just notice the jade bangle on the arms of most Chinese women. Jade works ofart are displayed in homes for both their beauty and their ability to radiategood luck and great fortune. Jade tools transcended their original function andhave become objects of great social and esthetic significance.

This is arare and precious piece of genuine Chinese history that we have treasured inour possession and believe will be received with similar ardor by a futurecollector or museum. We have heard that some few rare jade pieces such as thishave been mounted with gold and sometimes gemstones to be worn as pendants.Despite their grand weight, they travel well and show off in social events ofart and antiquities functions.

Size is 2”. It weighs approximately 2-1/2ounces.

NOTE: Deascension from the Heritage ofthe Americas Museum.
