Rare Antique Swiss Pewter Biberon, Or Drinking Vessel, Early 18th Century For Sale
This is an extremely rare Swiss vessel in pewter that usually was made to hang outside and hold water. There is a very similar example in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, accession number 16.116.3.
This version is more ornate, with human heads at the bases of the original iron handle and a distinctive boar or animal head at the upper spout. It also has a lower spout with the original metal and porcelain or bone turnspout.
Inside at the bottom can be seen the emblem of the Swiss rampant bear with the initials S and G, perhaps for the Swiss Canton of St. Gallen.
On the hinged lid next to the nob are the very clear letters GA next two them either H or two Ls. This is very likely the signature mark of the original maker.
The piece has a fine, consistent patina and the surface is fully intact, with several evidences of very old repairs and one small crevice or separation on the upper rim to the left of one of the human faces.
The body of the vessel is 7.5 inches in height and with the iron handle raised above it the height is 12.75 inches
