Rare \'CS\' Confederate Buckle, Oval Belt Plate with Copper Arrow Hooks:
$4000.00

This sale is for an exceedingly rare Confederate \"CS\" oval waist belt plate with copper arrow hooks from the American Civil War.  This plate was made in the same shop as Mullinax plates #157 and 158 (Confederate Belt Buckles & Plates / Expanded Edition), except the dimensions on this one are smaller at 55 X 82.5mm. The plate weighs 127.7 grams.  I purchased this plate from a collector in Pennsylvania.  The gentleman told me he acquired the plate from a Gettsysburg area collector roughly 20 years ago and that this particular plate originated from the famous John Rosensteel collection.  John Rosensteel was a well known collector in years following the battle of Gettysburg and he personally picked up countless artifacts from the farms and fields in the vicinity of the well known battle. The information that I was told was that this plate was picked up off the ground a few short years after the battle, on property just behind the Eisenhower farm.  To the best of my knowledge, this buckle is one of only two of this particular die variant that is known to exist.  The other example can be found on Shannon Pritchard\'s site and it is a dug example selling for $14,000.  This non-dug buckle is very odd, in that it is the only KNOWN example of a \"CS\" oval with arrow hooks that has a yellow brass front.  There are likely other examples, but it is difficult to determine on dug examples that have a 150+ year-old patina, whether the fronts are brass or copper. The shop that made this buckle would have been confined to the same supply restraints as other small shops producing buttons for the Confederacy.  There are many examples of Confedrate local buttons that, although made from the same dies, can be found with all combinations of fronts, backs and shanks made of copper, brass and iron.  All other known examples of arrow hook \"CS\" plates have a pure copper front, as well as pure copper arrow hooks.  The two arrow hooks on this example are the correct, heavy-gauge copper.  This buckle had a wartime repair, where its original copper tongue was broken off and replaced with what appears to be a brass rifle sling hook. If you look closely, you can see where the lead fill was melted out of the half of the buckle on the side of the tongue, so that the hook could be replaced and melted back in place.  The lead fill in the back of these \"CS\" oval belt plates is unlike lead in any other Civil War plates. The lead is heavily alloyed with zinc giving it a unique patina (when dug) and lighter weight than plates of similar size with similar dimensions and traditional lead fill.  This incredible relic is guaranteed authentic with no repairs other than the previously-mentioned wartime repair. I am offering a Buy-It-Now price of $4,000   Shipping is FREE in the lower 48 States.
