Rare pair of Late 17th Century Italo-German Gilt Bronze Angels :
$1950.00

We offer here a rare gilt bronze pair of Baroque angels made in Italo-German fashion. They are 8 and 1\'2\" tall. Condition is good used with wear to the gilding. There are small holes in the tops of each figure\'s head. There are no bases and the figures do not stand upright but could with bases added. Each angel holds parts of a broken chain in his hands. The use of broken chains in art symbolizes death. The angels were created in Germany under the influence of Italian models. The bottom left photograph shows a late 17th century pair of Italian angels such as would have been utiliized by the maker of our pair in the creation of his angels. The Italian angels were created by Giovanni Battista Foggini (1652-1725) in Florence, Italy. They are from the Reliiquary of St. Nicholas of Tolentine and were made in 1696. They are of cast, chased and gilded bronze. They are now in the Palazzo Pitti Museo degli Argenti. Note the similarities in the stances of the Foggini angels and ours and specifically the positions of the legs with one another. Our angels probably had , as the Foggini angels do, a purpose as symbols of death of a particular person and may have been part of a reliquary as is the case with the ones in the Pitti Museum. The photo adjoining the Foginni bronzes shows an Italo -German 17th century figure of an angel in gilded bronze. It appears as Figure 73 in Sotheby Parke Bernet\'s sale in New York on November 1, 1974. The photo is from the catalogue of that sale. The face and hair are nearly identical to our angels. Ours are the very essence of art of the Baroque era with the flowing wind-swept drapery and the dramatic poses .Free shipping in U. S. No foreign shipping please.
