RARE POST-MORTEMDAGUERREOTYPE PHOTO by SCOVILL w \"TOKEN\"CASE

HERE for the early/vintage photo collector\'s consideration is a most unusualand rare 1840s Daguerreotype (DAG) Post Mortem. It was acquired back in the90\'s at a Philadelphia estate sale just north of Philadelphia. It wasthe only photo we were able to get (all the others were well out of our budget),but did get some books and documents (I think we may still have one nauticallisted on ) that someone might connect the names. We couldn\'t.

We have very little (zero) expertise in this subject area, but will tryour best (with the aid of the photos below). We have checked with the localexperts and were advised that this is approximately a 1840s Victorian DAGImage on silver coated copper showing a deceased bay with mother or grandmotherholding her with black gloves. Interesting that there was also a larger DAG(probably 3 times the size of this one showing the deceased in a cradle anda family three adults and 5 kids surrounding her.

The only signature/mark that we could find was \"SCOVILL MFG Co.EXTRA\" at the bottom left corner. The old \"book\" style case is identified,on the binding, as \"THE TOKEN\". It appears that both the lady and childmay have had their skin tinted, we just don\'t know. We purchased it knowingthat someone had separated the glass cover from the copper plate (advertisedby sale house) and after all these years we have yet to have it restoredto a more presentable collectors item (with 3 teenagers other prioritiesstarted taking over).

The Scovill Manufacturing Company began its work in a former gristmillin Waterbury, Connecticut, where they produced brass buttons and other sewingparaphernalia, back in 1802. By late 1839 or early 1840, James L. Scovilland W. Scovill, began production of American-made Daguerreian plates forthe budding photo phenomenon that was about to sweep the country. In 1850,the company was incorporated as the Scovill.

An interesting old case representing a book; having a nice functioningclasp; a brass frame, that surround photo we think may be missing;and a bit of wear, mostly on case\'s edges, from 170 + years of being withthe family..

Well, as we mentioned earlier, with no experience in this area, we willleave it up to those with the expertise to determine condition and value.of this most rare and wonderful piece, that any collector would be proudto display in that special collection;but please, you be thejudge and examine the following photos and determine for yourself it\'s conditionand value. As always, we are anxious to respond to any and all inquiries.
