Rare superbly decorated mid 1700s Westerwald Georgian GR sprigged stoneware jug:
$299.99

We are listing this very rarely seen superbly decorated mid 1700s Westerwald Georgian stoneware jug which has an elaborate sprigged GR plaque on the front of it, and very striking incised and blue glazed designs around the front plaque and on the sides of the jug. GR (George Rex, or George the King) jugs were quite popular from 1714 through 1820 during the reigns of England\'s Kings George I through George III. Most of the pieces were made in blue and gray salt glazed stoneware (although the background on this piece is closer to a cream color) in the Westerwald area in Germany primarily for export to England and its colonies (George I-III were also Dukes and Prince-Electors of the Hanover Duchy in what is now Germany). Although it is usually impossible to definitively date GR pieces, this jug probably dates to the mid 1700s when George II\'s reign was ending and George III\'s was beginning, since the tail below the bottom of its handle was used between the earlier rolled (curled) terminals and the later flattened handle terminals (see page 27 of THE BEER STEIN BOOK A 400 Year History). Like many GR jugs, this one features holes in the top of its handle to anchor a metal lid if one were to be added (it appears one never was used on this piece). The second chapter of SALT GLAZED STONEWARE IN EARLY AMERICA is devoted to Westerwald stoneware found in America, and on pages 47-51 there are pictures of other GR jugs somewhat similar to the listed one. The listed jug has a very nicely sprigged GR plaque on its front, a rilled neck which has been accented with a manganese color, a simple looped handle, and beautiful blue coloring around its GR plaque and incised designs. It is 6.5 inches tall, 5 inches at its widest point, it displays very well, and it is in very good condition. To be very picky - there is an underglaze flaw on one side of the handle, a typical short separation line on one side of the top join of the handle, and tiny very minor flakes off the base edge. Please view the closeup pictures and judge for yourself. This is a very rarely seen piece of 1700s Westerwald Georgian stoneware, and a wonderfully decorative item as well.
