This is a beautiful PINWHEEL and SNOWBALL quilt with VERY UNUSUAL BORDER.
The quilt measures 62\" x 78\" and has been HAND QUILTED and HAND PIECED. the borders are really gorgeous with the RED and GOLD CROWNS (gold was probably once green). There is a THIN COTTON BATTING with a MUSLIN BACKING. the backing has been folded to the front and HAND APPLIED to make the 1\" border. The HAND QUILTING IS AT 6-7 SMALL, EVEN STITCHES PER INCH and the quilting pattern is OUTLINED QUILTING WITH DOUBLE OUTLINE (1/4\" APPART) ON THE BOARDER. The border pieces have been APPLIQUÉD with very close tiny stitches.
This is a STRONG QUILT that has NEVER BEEN USED OR WASHED. It has been hanging on displayand has picked up some staines here and there with the worst shown in the picture. The backing has no stains. There are also 2flea bites on the front that have had a few stitches to close them up and these do not go through to the back. I only found these upon close inspection. There is a black S stamped on one piece. Could be the first initial of the last name of the quilter.
A gentle wash by someone familiar with washing old quilts wouldbring this beauty to pristine condition. I am not sure of the date of this quilt, but the boarder makes me think 20\'s or 30\'s.
