Cast Iron Door Setw/Knobs, Plates, & Lock
Handsome, heavy-duty, antique, door lockset made by "Yale & Towne" of Stamford CT around the turn of the previous century. It consists of 2 iron knobs, 2 iron escutcheons, 1 steel mortise lock with bronze faceplate, 1 brass-plated steel strike plate for the door jamb, and 1 spindle with 1 setscrew and 1 securing pin to connect the knobs. All iron parts are solid, heavy, thick, cast iron, not flimsy wrought/stamped iron. The set weighs almost 4 lbs!

The set was removed from a door that was salvaged from NorthEastern Ohio. We found the set very dirty (see last photo). Since then, we cleaned and polished all parts to the best of our ability.

Originally, all parts were painted with an enamel paint to prevent rusting. Since then, some of the paint wore off and rust started to form. If you prefer a distressed look, the rust is just what you\'re looking for. However, if you prefer a cleaner, uniform look, you could either paint the knobs and escutcheons, or rub the knobs and escutcheons with oil every couple of months.All parts are in great shape with only the light nicks and scratches, that you would expect to find on hardware 100+ years old. There are no breaks, cracks, chips, dents, or deep scratches.

About the lock: The lock is reversible and could accommodate the swing of any door.

If you look at the last 2 photos, you will see that the lock originally had 2 latches. Prior to cleaning, we studied the lock to gain an understanding of its function in order to make a key. For the most part, the inside of the lock is similar to the thousands of other locks that we\'ve keyed, however, we weren\'t able to figure out the purpose or functionality of the upper latch of this lock. There is no internal mechanism that actually pulls it into the lock. The only way to retract the upper latch is by pushing it in with your finger. We could position the angled portion of the latch to face the strike plate, and actually enter the strike plate once the door closes, however, if the latch can\'t be retracted into the lock by using the knobs or key, the door would stay locked and would require you to break the latch, door, or jamb. After about 2 hours of studying and testing, we decided to remove the latch. Since this is a commercial-grade set, the lock may have been custom-designed to accommodate the setup of a specific customer? We will include the upper latch, it\'s spring, and arm when we ship the set, just incase you have a need for them.

The single latch acts as both a passage latch and deadbolt. Once the key is inserted and turned, the knob on the exterior side of the door is disabled, and the door could only be opened by turning the knob on the interior side of the door, or by using the key again to restore functionality to the exterior knob. This is a very convenient feature for the person inside of the room. No more locking and unlocking to let someone in. Simply turn the knob, open the door, let someone in, close the door and it\'s already locked. This lock must have been the top of the line during its day. Most locks have just 1 tumbler, and the more sophisticated have 3, but this has 4 tumblers! We\'ve only seen a lock with this many tumblers only once or twice over the past 10 years. It took almost 2 hours to make 1 key, and we could make more for $15/key--email us after the sale if you are interested.

We opened and inspected the lock, and we sprayed machine oil on and around the internal parts to facilitate their movement. The lock operates smoothly.

Although the photos do a good job of conveying the simple, elegant beauty of the set, they fail to convey the quality of its construction. Once you grab hold and feel the weight of each part, it will be clear that "they just don\'t make them like they used to." The set was built to last a lifetime, and if you are installing on a new door, there is a good chance that you will replace the door before the set.
