Revolt of Heraclii 610AD - Heraclius Alexandria Byzantine AE Follis Alexandretta:
$414.05

Sharp detail and well-struck, save for partial flat strike on both corresponding sides. Typical dark chocolate brown patina. This later issue of the revolt features the Heraclii both crowned. An attractive piece from a historic moment in Byzantine history!Dated indictional year 14 (ie. 610AD), this follis was struck in the last year of the revolt against the unpopular Emperor Phocas and it was in this same year that Heraclius (son of the Exarch of Africa) entered Constantinople and personally executed the tyrant. Though the mint is believed to be Alexandretta in Egypt, these folles do not look like any of the previous Byzantine denominations struck at this mint. Therefore, it is most probable that these revolt coins were struckat a military mint located near Alexandria and were almost certainly meant to pay the revolutionary army, & not for local circulation. IMAGE 2: Interestingly, it is noted in the Dumbarton Oaks catalogue that the long bearded Heraclius bust seen on the revolt solidii (attributed to Alexandria) was subsequently changed to a short stubble bust with introduction of the first official Constantinople solidii. The first solidii issues along with the revolt folles supposedly show Heraclius as he really was in 610 & that Heraclius‘ resemblance to the hated Phocas resulted in him trimming his beard as can be seen on the first Constantinople coins. Looking at the busts on this Alexandria follis, the resemblance to Phocas is quite evident!
