$38.77

Robert Dewar WAINWRIGHT (1781-1841) was a Lieutenant-Colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps, best known for his heroic efforts leading a group of 30 Marines to quell the Boston prison riots of 1824. While his employment with the Marines seemed tenuous at the writing of this letter, he was listed as an executive officer of the barracks at the Washington DC Navy Yard in 1835, and was stationed at Marine Head Quarters in 1836.

(10 x 8 in.), Norfolk, Va., 11 July 1834, to Colonel Loammi Baldwin, Jr.* of Charlestown, Mass. asking the Colonel to take pity on his situation and re-negotiate the terms of a loan, in full: \"I have just returned from the Springs where I have been by the urgent advice of Dr. Selden for the benefit of my health which is much improved, but, the extra expense I have incurred, and my removal from this station rendered imperative by the new organization of the Corps deranges my monied concerns more than ever. I write now Colo: to solicit you to remove the claim you now have on my furniture & to rely on my returning your loan by monthly instalments [sic] commencing before the note becomes due fifty dollars each month. My furniture I have advertised with Mr. Parks\'s consent but I fear the proceeds will scarce pay his notes and release me from this place. I have felt reluctant to ask from you this additional favour, but, I am compelled to do it— The organization of the Corps has not been made therefore the location of the principal port unknown [illeg] tests between Washington & New York I trust it will be the latter a [illeg] of right command it— It was with sorrow I saw announced the sudden death of your brother. I am inadequate to offer consolation on such an occasion but assure you of my sincere sympathy. Mrs. wainwright desires her best regards to Mrs. Baldwin and yourself in which I request to join. The family are at the moment well— I beg you will let me hear from you as early as possible. The indulgence is of great importance to me and shall not make much difference in the time of payment.\"
