Robert Rishell was an influential, and is a highly sought after California artist. Rishell played an instrumental part in founding the Oakland Art Museum; additionally, his paintings are held in a number of private and public collections, including the University of Chicago, Oakland Public Library World Trade Center, Oakland Museum, Palm Springs Desert Museum, UC Berkeley.

Rishell is best known for the portrait he wascommissionedto paint of JFKwhilehe was theGovernorof California. Thepainting exists in the Statecapital till this very day,despitevandalizingattempts.

The Neuschwanstein Castle was a perfect subject for Rishell.Although he was typically known for his Californian landscapes, the German Castle that was built built for King Ludwig II between 1869 and 1886 was located along a rugged cliff against a scenic mountain backdrop. The castle was intended to \"embody the true spirit of the medieval German castle\", as the king wrote in a letter to Richard Wagner. The building replicates 13th century Romanesque styles.

Like many artists of the period such as James Swinnerton, Lockwood DeForest, and Peter Ellenshaw, Rishell was fascinated by the magnificence of monumental sweeping big skies, desert bluffs, and dramatic shadows.
