It appears that Orange Blossom was a reworking of the dies used in Arbutus, yet it is a pattern that stands on its own. Arbutus was sold through the usual outlets: jewelers, catalogs and department stores. It is a high style Art Nouveau with a simple wreath of flowers at the top and another flower at the center. Salad as a part of everyday meals is a post World War 2 phenomenon. Before 1945, a lettuce salad was a seasonal dish, mainly in spring and fall when lettuce was available locally. Strangely, iceberg lettuce, the fairly standard base of most salads, was developed in the 1920s and only began to be shipped all over the country in the late 1930s. The separate fork for salad was considered a fancy extra with silver sets down until the late 1930s when it slowly began to replace the soup spoon as the fourth item in a place setting. Previously, salad forks were sold separately in lots of first six and then four. After 1945, people quit taking their raw vegetables and making soup; instead they put them into salads. In Arbutus there are two kinds of salad fork: the \'fancy\' grade offered here, which is more ornate, and a far simpler one. In addition, the fancy grade forks have 2 different kinds of decoration on the shoulders: the ones offered here have the French inspired curves, but no Arbutus flowers. The 6 salad/dessert forks offered here measure about 6 1/2\". These are not pieces of new silver. They show the patina of as much as 110 years of careful use. There are the light scratches which constitute normal patina. There is no monogram. Silver is softly lustrous. There is no silver loss. These forks have been carefully used and well cared for. The pattern is crisp and clear. These forks come in a red tarnish preventing flannel wrapper, which is clean and intact.I polish all silver before listing on .
