When new, the bouillon spoons were offered as a premium for Rex\'s Beef Extract. One could send labels and get free bouillon spoons. For this reason, many collectors start off with bouillon spoons and build up their sets. It is a lush Art Nouveau design. One of the skills of the Victorian homemaker was pickle making, an accomplishment that showed both the skill and the imagination of the housewife. That is why there are so many implements and devices for serving and even displaying pickles. The sideboard would be filled with a variety of castors showing off the many different pickled foods put up during the harvests. These added not only a note of color to the dining room, they provided a snack right at hand. Not just the cucumbers we think of as pickles, but peaches, eggs, tomatoes, onions and cherries would be set out for all to admire and enjoy. To serve these, the pickle forks would be set out also, one per container. Since pickle holders tended to be narrow and deep, long handled forks were used. Since pickling brine tends to be corrosive, not a whole lot of them come to us undamaged. The pickle fork offered here measures about 8 1/4”. This is not a piece of new silver. It shows the patina of 115 years of careful use. There are the light scratches which constitute normal patina. There is no monogram. Silver is softly lustrous. There is no silver loss except for tiny heel dots. This is the fancy pickle fork with the twisted handle. The pattern is crisp and clear. I polish all silver before listing on .
