HISTORY
The Roseville Pottery Company was an American pottery manufacturer in the 19th and 20th centuries. Though originally it made only simple household pieces, the design of the pottery was popular with the American Arts and Crafts movement, and its pieces are now sought after by collectors.
The company was founded by J.F. Weaver in Roseville, Ohio, in 1890. It was incorporated in 1892 with George Young, a former Roseville salesman, as secretary and general manager.Under the direction of Young, the Roseville company had great success producing stoneware flower pots and other practical household items. In 1895, the company expanded by purchasing Midland Pottery, and by 1896 George Young had amassed a controlling interest in Roseville Pottery. In 1898, they purchased the Clark Stoneware Company in Zanesville, and moved the headquarters there. Roseville Pottery produced its final designs in 1953, and the following year their facilities were bought by the Mosaic Tile Company.
Baneda, Moss, Futura, Velmoss and others are some of those extremely popular \'middle period\' patterns produced around 1928-1940. Collectors agree that much of the best Roseville Pottery was produced during the 1920\'s-1930\'s. They came in pink and green and blue colors and are the most sought after and therefore highest priced.
Many early Roseville pieces had an identifying number marked with an orange grease pencil on the bottom while others did not (though their catalogues had the numbers). The numbers have two, three, or four digits followed by a dash a one or two digit number. The first part of the number identifies the style or design of the piece and the following number specifies the approximate size. For example, a piece marked 51-10\" would mean that it was a 10\" vase. Most late 1920\'s and 1930\'s pieces were marked with an orange grease pencil, which frequently wore off. Starting in 1940 most pieces had either their number incised or later on, embossed, along with the name, \"Roseville.\"
Number Categories for identifying a style or piece of Roseville are generally as follows:
Below 100 - Vases, Planters
100\'s and 200\'s - Vases, Bowls, Cornucopias, Double Bud Vases, Planters
