HISTORY: The Roseville Pottery Company was an American pottery manufacturer in the 19th and 20th centuries. Though originally simple household pieces, the design of the pottery was popular with the American Arts and Crafts movement and pieces are now sought after by collectors. The company was founded by J.F. Weaver in Roseville, Ohio, in 1890. It was incorporated in 1892 with George Young, a former Roseville salesman, as secretary and general manager. Under the direction of Young, the Roseville company had great success producing stoneware flower pots and other practical household items. In 1895, the company expanded by purchasing Midland Pottery, and by 1896 George Young had amassed a controlling interest in Roseville Pottery. In 1898, they purchased the Clark Stoneware Company in Zanesville, and moved the headquarters there. Roseville Pottery produced its final designs in 1953, and the following year their facilities were bought by the Mosaic Tile Company. Baneda is another one of those extremely popular \'middle period\' patterns produced around 1933. Collectors agree that much of the best Roseville Pottery was produced during the 1920\'s-1930\'s. It came in pink and green/blue colors with the former (pink) being most sought after and therefore highest priced. As with much of the Roseville from this era, the \"middle period\" Velmoss pattern was only marked using a paper label, most of which never survived. Roseville patterns produced between 1927 and 1935 were marked with only paper or foil labels and sometimes with the corresponding shape number and size. Roseville patterns with paper or foil labels include such notable lines as Velmoss. On the bottom of some mid-period Roseville pieces, there are three or four digit numbers then a dash followed by a one or two digit number. The first part of the number identifies the style or design of the piece and the following number specifies the size. For example, a piece marked \'589-6\' would mean that it was six-inch pedestal. The \'589\' signifies that it is in the Pedestal category and the \'6\' represents the height of the piece.
