Roseville Velmoss Scroll 8 inch vase, circa 1916. This Arts and Crafts Movement-inspired design features a scrollwork of leaves, rose stems and the classic Mackintosh-style rose. The background is a cream color, with the roses, leaves and stems imprinted into the pottery ad painted subtle, natural colors. There are no markings on the bottom of this piece, which is the norm for the Velmoss Scroll pattern, as it was a very early Roseville pattern.
This vase is clean and beautiful, but it shows some age upon very close inspection. If held at an angle in the light, some crazing can be observed in the cream finish, and there is what may be a very slight and superficial crack -- although it may also be a small paint flaw.
This lovely vase would perfectly compliment many decor styles with its subtle, classic design. If you are a fan of the Arts and Crafts Movement, Mission style decor or the designs of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, this vase it a superb representation of the decorative arts from that era.
