SculptorEdvard Christian Johannes Eriksen was born on March 10th, 1876 in Copenhagen. He was trained as a sculptor, and in 1900 he married Eline Vilhelmine Moller. After Hans Christian Andersen wrote the fairy tale \"The Little Mermaid\", Eriksen was commissioned by Carl Jacobsen of Carlsberg Breweriesto create a statue of the Little Mermaid. On August 23, 1913Jacobsen donated the statue to the City and the Little Mermaid was mounted in the harbor of Copenhagen, and since has become a symbol of Denmark. This sculpture has celebrated its\' 100th anniversary in 2013.
Of note, Sculptor Eriksen used his wife as the model for all of his artwork, even \"The Little Mermaid\".
This figurine stands only 5\" tall and measures 4 1/4\" long and 2 3/4\" wide. This is a rare find in this size.
The \"Little Mermaid\" is nude, sitting on a gray/blue rock. Eriksen created atwin tail in a very light green and her hair in taupe/brown.The face is expressionless with black eyes. The figurine is in soft colors.
The back of the figurine reads Edvard Eriksen, Sculptor written on the rock. The marks on the bottom of the figurine states, \"Royal Copenhagen - Denmark\" with 3 blue waves, the inititals GB to the right. Figure number is 5689.
This figurine is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks,or repairs to the porcelain. The bottom is clean and is not dirty. The glaze is clear with no cracks. Very lustrous. Mint condition.
