An interesting legend is connected to"Be a Hero"stamp. German army attacked Russia in June 22, 1941 starting the Great Patriotic War. Russian government decided to quickly issue a patriotic stamp to encourage its people. The stamp design used a placard painting by V. Korethkiy “Mother’s Farewell to a Soldier Son. Be a Hero”. In August 1941, the stamp was issued with 3 million in quantity by the Goznack printing company. Only a small amount of the stamps was sent to the post offices for sale, with the most of them still in the Goznak storage facility when it was a German bombers raid on Moscow. Goznak was also printing Soviet Rubles and was one of the German targets. The storage facility was hit by the bombers and ended up engulfed in a huge fire that destroyed almost all of the stamps there. Most of the surviving stamps were used for letters to the front and didn’t survive/ reach collectors, this is what makes them so rare. In my 20 years of philatelic experience in Moscow, I‘ve never had a chance to get this “Be a Hero” stamp in such a perfect condition. But surprisingly in the US they are more common and more affordable. So now, after emigration from Russiato the US, I even can offer one block for sale.On Aug-20-12 at 12:14:51 PDT, seller added the following information:
