Gustave Doré, born January 6, 1832 in Strasbourg and died January 23, 1883 in Paris, in his hotel on rue Saint-Dominique, was a French illustrator, caricaturist, painter, lithographer and sculptor. Gustave Doré wishes to deploy his talent in the illustration of great works of literature, suffering from the contempt observed towards caricature and topical drawing. He will list the thirty masterpieces in the epic, comic or tragic genre of his ideal library, wishing to illustrate them in the same format as The Wandering Jew, Dante\'s Inferno, the Tales of Perrault, Don Quixote, Homer, Virgil, Aristotle, Milton or Shakespeare.
