SIGNED 19C FRENCH FIGURAL BRONZE OF OEDIPUS W/ THE SPHINX BY EMILE HEBERT NO RES Description
This listing is for a signed 19th century French figural bronze of Oedipus and the Sphinx by Emile-Hebert. The bronze measures 21 inches or 53 cm high, and 9 ¼ inches or 23.5 cm at its widest. It weighs 37 pounds.
The bronze shows a full standing figure of Oedipus next to the Sphinx. Oedipus is wearing a single strap across his chest holding his sword. He stands next to the Sphinx as he pulls a cloth from her head. The pedestal she sits on is engraved with answers to the riddle she asks Oedipus. The bronze has it original dark gold The front of the base is titled “OEDIPE”, and is signed on the side “EMILE-HEBERT” and on the base is marked “G & S MEDAILLE D’OR 1867”. Pierre Eugene Emile Hebert (1828-1893) was born in Paris and was the son and pupil of his father Pierre Hebert. He exhibited genre, and classical groups at the Salon from 1849. The bronze is very impressive and in very good condition. There is minor darkening to the patina. Please see the many photographs for more on the look and condition of this piece.
