SMALL EARLY 19TH CENTURY ALPHABET & VERSE SAMPLER BY ALICE BIRCH - APRIL 1827:
$127.50

Small early 19th century linen and wool work sampler by Alice Birch - April 1827. Worked in red and green wool, this little sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns, whilst the lower section contains the following short verse with Alice\'s details to finish
Wealth may take wing and riches fly awayBut God is a rock that never will decayAlice Birch April 1827
The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age with some staining across the bottom edge from glue residue. The colours of the wool are good with some small areas of stitch loss. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Alice first stitched it. This photograph also shows remnants of old paper and glue on the top and bottom edges of the linen from where the sampler has been glued down at some point of time.Measures 7 3/4 \" x 11 1/2 \"
