*A couple things I forgot to mention in the below description...This horn has rolled tone holes. Apparently some of the Rev D\'s did, but not all of them. Also, it has had one modification done. A second strap ring was added (see pictures). The original strap ring is not really in the best position, so a generic one was soldered on at a more optimal position.
This listing is for a vintage SML \"Rev. D\" alto saxophone. SML is one of the smaller French saxophone makers that operated in the shadows of Selmer, yet they made some very highly regarded horns. The \'Gold Medal\' model was the pinnacle of SLM production, but the \'Rev. D\' is a very close second. If you were to think about this in comparison to Selmer, the Rev. D is to the Gold Medal as the Super Balanced Action is to the Mark VI. The \'D\' has many of the same features as the \'Gold Medal\', including the innovative collet style neck tightener, and adjusting screws on all of the stack keys (Selmer didn\'t have that!). In fact, according to its serial number (11,8xx), this Rev. D was manufactured in the same year that the Mark VI entered production, 1954. so this was certainly a competitor to the mighty Selmer horn!
This example is in excellent physical condition, however it is in need of a re-pad/overhaul. The body is perfectly straight. There are no significant dents or dings, or even any minor pings for that matter. There may be a tiny nick here or there, but you\'d be hard pressed to find it. I did have one minor repair done by my tech. The low C# key lower post was pushed in slightly. The repair was done quite well, but it required the post to be resoldered and the lacquer must have gotten scorched in the process, so he spot lacquered a very small area (couple square inches at most). Other than that the lacquer is all original and in great condition for being 50+ years old. Naturally, it has the standard minor wear and scratches, but overall this horn looks great. In fact, it has really nice full bell length engraving that extends onto the bow and the pants gard is also engraved! The key-work is all moving freely and fluidly, so there are no bent or frozen keys. Furthermore, there appears to be very little mechanical wear to the key-work, so it will require little, if any swedging. This will make a really fine horn with a standard overhaul!
This horn comes in a nice hard shell formed case. The name plate is missing, but it looks like a Pro-tec. It is in great shape, and clean and odor free inside. There is no mouthpiece/ligature/etc. included with this horn. What you see is what you get.
With a good overhaul this horn should rival any Mark VI for half the price!
Please feel free to email me with any questions.
Thanks again for looking!
