This hard-to-find item is an attractive souvenir medal (pendant or fob) from the 31st national encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.), which was held in Buffalo, New York, August 25-27, 1897. The medal has a great G. A. R. monogram on one side, with the date 1897 and the wordsNATIONAL ENCAMPMENT BUFFALO. The design of the other side is the G. A. R. logo (symbol) that includes the G. A. R. motto FRATERNITY CHARITY LOYALTYand the dates 1861 and 1866. This medal was struck very well, with very good, bold detail, and it was holed for use as a fob. This item appears to be composed of brass, with a very bright light gilt surface treatment, most of which remains. There is no mark for the manufacturer or metal content. The diameter is approximately 19 mm (3/4\").

This item in very fine condition with extremely light wear (if any), light signs of handling, toning, and soiling. Approximately 50-70% of the gilt surface remains, and it is very bright.
