On a passage to Canada ,in 1918, the crew of the British tramp steamer Normadier were struck down with Blackwater fever contracted in Dakar. Within days nearly all the crew were either dead or dying and by the time an American destroyer came to the rescue of the drifting ship in mid-Atlantic, only the author - a wireless operator - and one other crew member were still alive. The book graphically describes the harrowing scenes on board the ship during this tragic voyage.
