This is a stunning Early Victorian Solid Silver Propelling Pencil with a stone set top crafted by the world renowned Victorian Silversmith Sampson Mordan, This beautiful solid silver Propelling Pencil has everything that should still be retained with an original early Sampson Mordan Pencil, it not only has the most beautiful engine turned decoration to the body but also a couple of things that the serious collector would look for, it has hand-engraved scrolling foliage to the top with a stunning pale yellow stone inset. Elaborately cast examples should echo the design on the slider ring of which this one does and are the most sought after, Have a good look at the terminal at the opposite end of the lead holder, which unscrews to reveal lead storage cylinders which is extremely rare to find fully intact and with a couple of pieces of lead inside, the slide action still works very smoothly, the quality of the craftsmanship is superb as you would expect being crafted by one of the finest Victorian silversmiths. this is marked to the body of the pencil with the wording \'S.MORDAN & CO MAKERS & PATENTEES\' which dates this stunning pencil to circa 1840, there are no other hallmarks but that isn\'t unusual and it does test for solid silver, it measures 4-1/4 inches when extended and weighs 14.3 grams, the condition is excellent with no dents or repairs, just the normal amount of surface wear expected in a piece that has been used for over 170 years, this would have once belonged to a wealthy Victorian Gentleman and been used daily when letter writing was done by hand on a daily basis in times that were so very different, its a stunning pencil, this will add something very special to any collection.
Marks matter and can help with dating, especially when useful hallmarks aren\'t present. Pencils made from 1823-37, when Riddle and Mordan parted, usually bear an \'SM GR\' hallmark and the words \'S.MORDAN & Cos PATENT.
From c1838 until the 1850s, the wording \'S.MORDAN & CO MAKERS & PATENTEES\' was used, * with \'S.MORDAN & CO MAKERS\' dating from the 1850s-60s. After the 1860s, the standard \'S.MORDAN & CO\' mark was usedThanks for looking
