BUFFET-CRAMPON“Model R13”, #30,042 made in France in 1947.

Keywork shows minimal wear to the keywork.

The clarinet came to us with unplated nickel-alloy normal keywork. We\'ve had all keysbright silver plated.

No cracksto the wood, 100 % all new pads & corks wood quality and a rich tone-color.

Thisparticular clarinet is just about as fine an instrument as you’d find anywhere.

Superb wood quality, all parts original, no cracks or wood damage of any kind.

Keywork wears new bright silver plate and (I\'ll say it one more time) all pads and corks are new.

Thisis a really fine clarinet, far better, we believe, than anything made in Francetoday.

Have a look at Buffet\'s 1947 catalog / pricelist, photo attached.

This clarinet is being sold with a photocopy of Buffet’s1947 catalog, just to prove to the buyer that it’s a true “R-13” model.

Just to make sure you\'re NOT confused.... Buffet\'s current web site tells us that the R-13 model originated in 1955, though the design work of a M. Robert Carree.

Regretfully, this is not correct. See below, please....

By virtue of the fact that we’ve been an authorizeddealer for Buffet-Crampon clarinets since 1953, we confirm that we have accumulatedquite a number of original Buffet clarinet catalogs and price-lists.

Buffet’s current owners insist, in print and viatheir web-site, that the famous and well-accepted “Model R-13” clarinet was theresult of the 1955 design work of Robert Carree, an employee of their workshopin Mantes. The implication is that any pre-1955 Buffet is not an R-13.

Regretfully, this is incorrect information. In our library, we have original Buffetcatalogs going back to the 1920’s. Wenote that clarinets marketed before 1947 were designated “Model 13” or “No.(number) 13”.

But Buffet’s 1947 catalog clearly shows that year\'scurrentproduction as R-13 models.

Hugo Schreiber, past president of Buffet-Crampon and(like me….) and a burned shareholder in the Tolchin Musical Instrument /Buffet-Crampon S.A. ownership, has been quoted as noting “the R-13 was a stocknumber going back to before 1936”.

Which means that OUR firm prefers to note Buffet-Crampon’s“top of the line” clarinets made before 1947 as “model 13” and after 1947 as“model R-13”.

Why it matters…I’ve used the same late 1920’s Buffet clarinet since 1963. In the past half century, I’ve play-testedthousands of clarinets and I’ve never found one I like better. It’s the reasonI strongly recommend older “true vintage” Buffet clarinets. Better wood, betterworkmanship, more resonance. In ouropinion, I mean.

Think of it this way…. Italian violins, FrenchBordeaux red wines, British sports cars, beautiful ladies and BUFFET CLARINETSare all better if they have a few years of maturity!.............. In our opinion…..

INSTRUCTIONS FOR CARE OF NEWWOOD INSTRUMENTS

(CLARINETS, OBOES ANDRECORDERS)

Theprimary causes of cracks in wood instruments are rapid changes in temperatureand extreme changes in humidity. If awood instrument is cold on the outside and warm on the inside, or if it is dryon the outside and moist on the inside, IT WILL CRACK!

Inorder to prevent rapid temperature changes, please observe the following:

1)Do not leave your instrument in a very cold area (such as in the trunk of acar) or in a very warm area (such as near a heating vent) for long periods oftime.

2)If your instrument does become cold, do not blow warm air through it towarm it up. If possible, let theinstrument warm up gradually. If this isnot possible, blow air on the outside of the instrument before playingit.

Inorder to prevent extreme changes in humidity, please observe the following:

1)Carry one or two commercial humidifiers (such as a Damp-it, or the kind foundin Tobacco shops) in the case during the dry winter months. Check this at least once a week to be sure itis kept damp. If you do not have ahumidifier, use a damp paper towel or damp sponge.

2)Swab your instrument EVERY TIME IT IS PLAYED to remove all moisture from theinside of the instrument. THIS IS VERYIMPORTANT. Use a commercial cottonhandkerchief-type swab or a wool brush-type swab. DO NOT USE FEATHERS! These do not absorb moisture and arepractically worthless. If you use ahandkerchief-type swab on oboes, please make sure it is long enough to pull outthe same way it went in. If you pull itthrough, it will get stuck.

Ifthe tenon or bell rings on the instrument become loose, or if the keys begin tobind or stick, the instrument may soon crack. If this happens, place the entire instrument in a plastic bag with a wetsponge, making sure that the sponge does not touch the keys. Tie the bag tightly and let the instrumentsit in a warm place for a day. If thisdoes not correct the problem, take the instrument to a repair shop IMMEDIATELY!

Wecannot guarantee that wood instruments will not crack. BUT WE CAN GUARANTEE THAT THEY WILL CRACK IFTHE ABOVE PRECAUTIONS ARE NOT TAKEN!

Ifyou have questions regarding the care of wood instruments, or regardingwarranty or repairs of cracked instruments, please call us toll-free at1-800-835-3006.

****WICHITA BAND INSTRUMENT COMPANY / WICHITA, KANSAS / USA

It’s sometimes possible to buy a good saxophone on for a lower price, but unless that instrument wears all new pads and corks from a reputable shop, you won’t know how it plays until you spend another five to seven hundred to have it mechanically overhauled. With a saxophone from OUR shop, you know it’s in the finest condition when it arrives at your home!

Here’s what we do to all the used clarinets we sell:

The instrument is taken apart and everything washed clean. We don’t believe in chemical dips, but do use plenty of soap and water! All wood parts are inspected for checks and damage, polished and then soaked in oil for three days. After the body-shop work’s been completed, we swedge hinge-tubes tight again and re-fit to the clarinet body. Finally, pads and corks are replaced and the instrument play-tested. Most customers tell us that our clarinets are then actually mechanically better than new.

Wichita Band Instrument Company maintains a repair department capable of restoration work of the highest quality. Even though repairs are essentially “free” for the first two years, after that period has expired, we remain at your service to maintain and repair your musical equipment forever. It’s our “service after the sale” promise and has been since 1953!

In the event that a customer requires service under factory guarantees or Wichita Band’s service warranty, the item must be returned to us and not directly to the manufacturer.
