This variant of theGagonmasks of northern Dan, with its bird’s head, long, curved beak, triangular nose, close-set eyes and worn patina, belongs to a genre of powerful Dan masks whose purpose was as much to entertain as was ritual. The actual use and context are unclear since almost every Dan social function, from fire-watching, adjudicators, warriors, debt collectors, social delinquents and warriors, and even spying. had its own mask. Often inherited through lineages, masks like these were kept on altars and recharged with offertory substances.
