SUPERB Pair Chinese Export Famille Rose / Rose Mandarin Vases c.1840 :
$96.85

Up for sale this excellent pair of Famille Rose pallette Chinese Export Vases, dating from around 1840 in the Rose Mandarin pattern, with four panels of decoration to the body of the baluster shaped vases and gilded mask and loop handles. These vases would have been produced in the Canton region specifically for export to the British market.

The decoration on these is simply amazing, each vase has 2 panels of figures in a house and two panels of birds, butterflies and insects in flowers and branches to the body of the vases. The necks have four panels also, again with the same decoration i.e. 2 figural and 2 with insects and flowers. The vases are baluster shape with flared necks.

Surrounding the panels is a decoration of gilded swirls and enamelled butterflys. The gilded decoration and the amount of detail with the additional butterflies and insects along with the birds is quite unusually detailed and shows these to be of the better quality. The rims of the vases show the Iron Red banding which is typical of the early nineteenth century peices.

They are decorated in the typical Famille Rose pallette, with pinks highlighted with other colours in enamels. The amount of gilding used is a real indication of quality and gives them a lovely look. The detail involved is great and some of the insects are unusual.

Both vases are unmarked and are hand potted, with a couple of minor manufacturing flaws to the base if you look very closely. Condition is good, one vase just has a minor chip to the rim (less than 5mm), the other has a hairline crack to the neck which again does not detract, and a chip.

These vases have come from a private collection we have purchased.

Measurements 10.5\" tall.

Its rare to find one decorated to this level and quality, however to find the pair is a real bonus, they would make a superb addition to any collection or as peices for your interior design..

Famille Rose ( “Fencai,” first made during the Yoagzheng period from 1723-1735) and Rose Medallion (19 th century Chinese export) are from the “pink family” of Chinese porcelains, each having a rose palette. The rose color comes from colloidal gold and many pieces have powder colors of opaque yellows and whites (jen cai). Famille Rose usually is designed with over glaze enamel (Yangcai) figures and flowers and gilt. Rose Medallion usually has a floral design and was fired in various colors of white in Jingdezhen (Jianqxi Province) and was sent to Canton (Quandong) to be decorated. Rose Medallion usually has 4 alternating panels around a gold circle and often has scroll-like butterflies, flowers and birds with gold gilt. Rose Mandarin is from the Famille Rose family and is designed with human figures.
