Fabulous Georgian Garter Brooch…

I love this very sweet little broochset with foiled almandine garnets.

It is small but perfectly formed and ishand chased. There are no marks or stamps on the piece and I have tested it andguarantee it to be 18ct.

The little purple stones look likeamethysts but in fact they are foiled Almandine Garnets (with the exception ofone which has been replaced with paste during the Victorian period).

The rear has a small glass compartmentwhich has woven hair inside. Sometimes these were memorial pieces with the hairof a departed loved one but it was also the fashion to give a gift with yourhair in it or to make a piece of jewellery with your own hair – a popularVictorian pastime.

This cute little brooch would make a fabulous stocking pin on your wedding day!

Closes with an extended* pin and C catch.

An identical brooch (not sure if thatone has a memorial compartment on the rear) is featured in Plate 76. On Page 299of Shirley Bury’s fabulous book Jewellery 1789 – 1910 The International Era (published by the Antique Collectors Club).

*Extended pins on brooches are often a good indicator ofperiod. The pins were made longer and extended beyond the edge of a brooch toaccommodate the thicker Victorian fabrics that were pre 1880’s

Condition: Two of the garnets have small chips - only visable with a 10 x loupe one of the garnets is an early replacement - replaced with paste. Small scratches to the rear - small filing (neither me!) on the rear edge shown clearly in the photo\'s
