From the Foreword -----

The Saga of the Great Lakes is reprinted from the famous History of the Great Lakes, Volume I, originally published by J. H. Beers & Co. in 1899.

This rare volume was the first general historical study of the Great Lakes ever undertaken, and today it is still considered to be the most complete and accurate account available.

Today\'s readers of history will find this book to be a pleasant and exciting surprise. Instead of the dry, academic flavour often found in contemporary, as well as latter-day historical writing, the adventures of the Great Lakes and surrounding areas are written in an energetic, enthusiastic, easy-to-read style that brings this oftentimes forgotten era to life.

The main emphasis of this book is on the exploration of the entire Great Lakes area. The contributions of these courageous explorers are told in such a \"human\" way that the reader can empathize with their struggles, understand their motivations and share in their sometimes insurmountable plights. Men such as Champlain, Le Caron, Nicolet, Marquette, Jolit and La Salle are no longer names vaguely remembered from dull history lessons. They become very real people battling against hostile Environments and peoples.

As these explorers opened up new territories, it became obvious that the Great Lakes were extremely valuable for trade and commerce. Soon, human greed became yet another element with which to contend eventually, for over 100 years, Great Britain, France, the United States and even Spain fought for possession of these valuable territories, while many Indian nations battled to save their native lands and traditions.

This book deals with the pre-history of the great Lakes, including their very formation, and contains a descriptive section with quotes from early writers who gave their first impressions of the area. It ends with the War of 1812 fought between Great Britain and the United States.
