This metal is highly coveted for itspropertiescombining strength, low weight and resistance to corrosion but is much too rare to play a significant role in commerce with the exception of a few very expensive projects. The Russians used it in certain critical components for their Mig-29 fighters, for example. Only 100 pounds of this metal are produced annually worldwide. Pounds, not tons!
And if you\'re going to buy a little you might as well do it in style. Scandium metal comes in three tiers. The cheapest are turnings. These come as recovered waste from turned or milled manufactured parts. Since scandium is always alloyed with other metals to some degree this is the least pure grade available and, because the process of machining generates high temperatures, it is also the most heavily oxidized. Mid-grade scandium is known in the trade as reduced or recycled. These are actually two streams though they\'re often combined at the factory and include remelted turnings and scandium that has been recovered, or reduced to use the chemical term, from scandium oxide which is the form that is normally commercially available. Reduced scandium looks like squarish chunks because they are broken off from a plate of scandium that formed as it solidified after melting.
The last and highest grade of scandium is distilled or dendritic crystalline and, at 99.995%, is the highest purity short of single crystal growth specimens. This form of scandium is the product of a truly arduous extraction and purification from ore that involves literally hundreds of separate steps. This highly purified metal is then sold in small quantities to laboratories who turn it into sputtering targets for vapor deposition and growing metallic crystals.
Here\'s another piece of info you might not find elsewhere. Reduced/recycledscandium currently trades for between $10,000-$20,000/kg while \"virgin\" distilled goes for $28,000-$35,000 - when available! So how can we offer dendritic scandium at below wholesale prices? Sometimes you just get lucky. Unlike silver or gold, if a manufacturer buys a kilo of scandium but ends up with some leftover it cannot simply be sent back to the trader for a pro-rated refund. Remember, there is only about 100lbs of new scandium coming to market every year. What this means is that it\'s often the case there is no inventory until after the buyer puts in an order who then gets delivery when the refiner is done processing his batch. Neither the metals trader nor the refiner are interested in getting back their scandium if there isn\'t another buyer at the ready. So that leftover scandium is often left \"orphaned\": of perhaps no further use but still too valuable to throw out. Secondary traders however put out word for these small orphaned lots with the intent of consolidating them back into sizable quantities that can then re-enter the market. By tapping into this micro-trade is how we came across a good amount of this metal and are now able to offer it at reasonable cost through . We hope you found this info of interest and may consider owning a little of this super-rare commodity!
