For your consideration is this scarce original 1883 George Washington Evacuation Day Medal. Labeled as Baker S-319. Issued by the American Numismatic Society. Artist was Lea Ahlborn. Features a fantastic portrait of George Washington on the obverse. Under the pedestal is signed C. Osborne INV and Lea Ahlborn FEC.The reverse features the seal of the New York State Chamber of Commerce, flanked by the City of New York and the American Numismatic and Archaeological Society seals. The inscription reads \"To Commemorate the Centennial Anniversary of the Evacuation of New York by the British and the Erection by the Chamber of Commerce of the State of New York of the Washington Statue in Wall Street\".
The medals were struck at the Swedish Mint in a very limited number. There were only 332 bronze medals struck, and 2 were struck in silver. The medal has a diameter of 57 mm and was struck in bronze. Interesting relief with the obverse sunk in toward the center as designed, and the reverse features the seals in high relief. Nicely toned to a dark brown, darker than my scans are able to show.Not graded but obviously high grade with only the slightest wear that is visible on the rim. The areas of high relief appear to show only the absolute slightest wear on Washington\'s hand.A very desirable medal that will be an excellent addition to your collection.
