As found on the madeinchicagomuseum website (GREAT Site!)

Founded in Prague (yes, the one in Europe) in 1898, the business was originally known as the Victor Tape Company, and specialized in hats. Well, not hats, exactly—but the cotton bands

that went around the perimeter of said hats. Since it was the turn of the century and everyone wore hats, business was good.

In 1915, company owner Charles Weiner made a bold leap to the New World, settling in Chicago at 2411 Clybourn Ave and re-branding his business the Chicago Printed String Company. Four years later, he partnered with Otto Vogl to incorporate the business, and while the men ostensibly still made cotton tape, they also had a pretty radical new vision of what that tape could accomplish. Specifically, they patented several forms of “advertising tape”—binding ribbon that simultaneously marketed a product or company. Their key early creations were “Print-Ad-String”—flat, customizable, cotton-yarn tape—and “Ribbonette,” an affordable alternative to silk and satin ribbons that quickly gained popularity with candy confectioners and high-grade textile manufacturers. You could select any color or style you wanted, and the Chicago Printed String Company would deliver.

CPSCo also found a cash cow in happy occasions—i.e., wrapping paper, ribbons and bows for gift-giving purposes among the general populace. The ribbon dispenser in our collection (complete with two colorful Ribbonette spools) helped crafty people quickly trim off the amount of colorful decorative binding they needed, without loose strands flying around the room and distracting house cats. You would also find ribbon holders in some offices, as companies took to sending out packages with their own custom binding on the outside.

With profits soaring, the Chicago Printed String Co. moved into its own new building at 2300 W. Logan Blvd. in the late 1920s. Soon they had over 20,000 customers on the books and a team of 30 salesmen scouring the country. Not resting on their laurels, Werner and Vogl systemically sought to solidify their empire—scooping up amusing, whimsical patents and suing companies that tried to copy their methods.

One fellow, in particular, a Mr. William A. Elbers, spent much of the 1930s trying to rip off the Chicago Printed String brand—with a weird, obsessive level of dedication. Working at random companies like the Milwaukee Printed String Co., United Printed String Co., and National Tinsel MFG Co., Elbers repeatedly tried to market products called “Tie-Ad-String,” “Tye-Ad-String,” and “Ribbontye.” Charles Weiner, in turn, kept taking Elbers to court, winning each and every time. One of the earliest suits, in fact—filed in 1930—related directly to the design of the company’s spool holder, which Elbers had also copied, right down to the “crinkled green” paint job. And yes, the spool holder in our collection was originally green before time had its say.

“The spoolholder is not like a container that is emptied and discarded,” court records of the 1930 case state, “but is a machine into which, by manipulation of certain parts, the loaded spool is inserted and the empty spool removed. …The spool and the holder are only used together, and should be considered together.”

By the 1950s, the next generation of the company became well known for its “Tie-Tie” brand of gift-wrapping, as seen in an ad below from a 1959 issue of Billboard Magazine. That same year, a column by Chicago Tribune columnist Ruth MacKay, “the White Collar Girl,” made mention of the Printed String Co.’s large number of young, female employees.

“You may not know it,” she wrote in the article from Sept. 16, 1959, “but while you’re in the land of nod, a staff of women is busily making ribbon in the early morning hours—for you to tie your Christmas presents. They work at the Armitage and Logan plants of Chicago Printed String Co. It seems like a page in long ago history when the first girl pages were introduced in metropolitan banks. Now a lot of bright youngsters get their start that way. . . . Which reminds me of the young miss asked by a personnel director for references who handed over a letter: To Whom It May Concern. Sara Blank worked for us one week and we’re satisfied.”

Latter period String Co. history gets more confusing. A website of a company called Fibertek, Inc. claims that the Chicago Printed String Co. actually went nomadic again in 1960 and relocated to Franklin, Tennessee, renaming itself CPS Industries. After several ownership changes, the company was then re-branded again as Fibertek in 1989. It should be noted, in bold font, that the Fibertek website hasn’t been updated since 2003, AND there are plenty of records of Chicago Printed String still operating its Logan Blvd. office into the 1970s. So, as is often the case, I open the floor up to readership to connect the dots on this one. What really became of the Chicago Printed String Company?!

I can at least tell you what became of their old factory. In this happy story from Preservation Chicago, the Art Deco building was actually saved from the wrecking ball at the last minute in 2004, and has since become a successful Logan Square retail space with a mattress store and a Panera. So… there ya go. The ribbon of time spools onward.

Terms Of Service

Selling on has been our primary focus since 1998. We uphold and instill the value of treating all of our customers as if they are family.

Our company motto is to \"Be courteous, promptly answer e-mails, be fair in all our dealings, and try and make friends of each and every customer.\"

Unfortunately, in today\'s market with \'s rating system and the never ending rate increases in the U.S. Postal & other carrier rates, we need to define and explain our methods of business.

ONE - Who We Deal With

We sell and ship worldwide to anywhere, so please email us for a quote to wherever you happen to be.

TWO - Tracking

We are required to put tracking on every package, even if it raises the cost of shipping it.

THREE - Shipping Charges

We charge shipping based on the USPS system. We will sometimes ship via courier if we can get it to you within the same time frame or faster. We add a reasonable cost for materials and handling. Our materials cost is based on exactly what it has cost us to wrap similar sized items in the past. We realize that almost everything we sell is valuable to you and there is nothing worse than having something break in its final journey to your hands. We do our best to pack properly and use the correct materials to protect your win. If we are able to get the item to you for less than our quote we will refund the difference to you!

For oversized items or items that will take special attention to package, (building a crate, wrapping many small items individually, etc.), we ask you to email us for a quote on shipping prior to the sale ending. If you do not, we charge the same amount as if you did.

FOUR - International Shipping

We charge shipping based on the USPS international system. The rates follow the same guidelines as number 3 above, though for international customers we add an additional $1.00 to cover the extra paperwork involved in international shipping. If an amount goes over $100 in value we will only ship it with Priority or Express Mail, regardless how small an item. That allows for us to have international tracking. We have to include tracking even on First Class Mail, so we can not just throw something in an envelope and stick a stamp on it.

FIVE - Insurance

\'s policies no longer allows us to charge the client for insurance. However... we still apply insurance to any item that goes over $27.00 in value. We reserve the right to use the insurance carrier of our choice. Sometimes that is Postal or the Carrier\'s Insurance and sometimes that is a private insurance company such as DSI or U-PIC/Shipsurance. If we use a private insurance company the package will not be marked insured, though it will be covered.

SIX - Methods of Payment Accepted

We aoffere by \'s rules and try and stay abreast of their changes. We accept Paypal. Paypal also accepts the major credit cards, or we also take Credit Cards Directly over the phone, (MC, VISA, DISCOVER, AMERICAN EXPRESS, CARTE BLANCHE, DINERS CLUB, JCB) Bottom line, whatever method is most convenient for you.

SEVEN - Time Frame To Pay

We ask all sales to be paid for in the fastest possible time frame. (This is all we do for a living and we need the money to pay the bills and buy more unique and fun items to put up on ). If an item goes unpaid we report the transaction to to recover our fees, this counts as a strike against the winning buyer unless they step forward and pay.

EIGHT - Shipping Time Frame

We make every effort to ship in a timely manner. We are listing tons of items, and are just plain swamped, so we have to schedule a special time to pack and ship. We ship on a first paid, first shipped basis. (We do not ship any item until it has been paid and the funds have cleared.) With the ebb and flow of payments we manage to get everything out of the door within one week. If there is a rush, we will make every effort to work with you in getting it out of the door faster. As you can see from our response, we do not disappoint. OF COURSE, items that need special attention, crating, etc adds to the time frame of those items.

NINE - Local Pickup

Sometimes it makes sense to come by and pickup your items. Sometimes an item is just too big for any other option. If you\'ve arranged local pickup with us, you must pickup the item within 30 days otherwise it will be subject to storage fees and/or relisting. Storage fees for items begin one month after being won, and the fee consists of $5 per item or 10% of the value, whichever is greater, each month it is stored. If the storage of the item exceeds 11 months or exceeds the overall purchase value, the item will be ours to resell in order to recover the storage fees.

TEN - Communication

Please feel free to contact us at anytime, with any question or comment. Unless we are out of town, we make an effort to answer all emails as quickly as possible.
