DESCRIPTION: Original regulation strip of Civilwar wooden matches!!! Matches were made of a thin piece of wood, cut (split) into individual matches that could be broken off as needed by the soldier.Each end is tapered and coated with red material for striking, similar topresent day kitchen matches.
The interesting thing about this is that it was found with some other things in a Civil War soldier\'s haversack I bought a few years ago.I believe that an original full strip had 17 matches. There are 12 complete ones left on this strip plus 2 more that are broken off as shown (probably from being in the haversack all these years), and you can see where the others were taken off one side and used by the soldier.
So, almost a full strip and alarge remnant of an actual strip of original CW matches, actually issued to and used by a soldier !!
This is not something very often seen generally, and a reallyneat accessory for display in a variety of CW collections!!!
SIZE/CONDITION: Excellent condition, about1 1/2\" x 2 1/2\".
