This is a lovely, antique, sterling silver spoon. It is clearly marked Sterling and was made by the Mechanics Sterling Co, Attleboro, MA, which became part of the Watson Newell Silver Co.
It has the Mechanics Sterling Co hallmark (Flag with an H on it) next to the word Sterling.
This souvenir spoon was created for John Davis Long - Secretary of the Navy 1897-1902 and the USS Maine which became the basis for the cry, \"Remember the Maine\".
Long was the Secretary of the Navy when the Maine sank during the Cuban revolt from Spain.
FRONTThe bowl of the spoon has an engraved picture of the USS Maine and the word - Maine.The stem has the words - Secretary Long.Above that is the Great Seal of the United States.The picture of Secretary Long is on the handle.BACKThe Hallmark for the Mechanics Sterling Co (Flag with an H on it) and the word - Sterling.

My pictures do not do this sterling silver spoon justice. The quality is amazing. It is lovely!

The engraving and silver work, especially of the battleship, USS Maine, are stunning.

This spoon is part of a large collection that has been in our family for many, many years - many well over 100 years. Both my Mother, Grandmother & Great Grandmother collected antique spoons wherever they traveled. They have been sitting in a box for years and it is time to share them with others.

I do not do returns unless I have made a huge mistake in the description. I am trying to pare down and clean out. This is why I don\'t do returns. So please, carefully consider the size and appearance of this item before you offer.

Why am I selling some of my collections? I started collecting things when I was 12 years old, following in my Mother\'s footsteps & guided by her. Now that I am retired, it is time to pare down these collections. It is a waste for all these items to sit and not be enjoyed.

While my husband is cleaning out his salesman\'s samples from his collegiate business, I am cleaning out my closets and paring down my collections of clothing, jewelry, antiques and glassware.
