Set of 4 Different Georgian Period Wedgwood Queen\'s Ware Pots de Creme c. 1795:
$395.00

We are offering this extraordinary set of four 18th c. Wedgwood Queen\'s Ware pots de crème that have been in our collection formany years. They were made in the last quarter of the 18th c. when the name of Wedgwood\'s creamware was changed to Queen\'s Ware after Wedgwood\'s appointmentas \"Potter toHer Majesty Queen Charlotte\"in 1766. The shape of these covered cups isexactly the same as the pots de crème in the \"Frog Service\" made for Catherine II of Russia made by Wedgwood in 1773-74.
I am not sure if thisset was made together to be a\"harlequin set\" or if they were carefully collected laterto match exactly in shape and size. Each is decorated differently; the first very simply with brown enameled bands at the bottom and top of the cup and on the periphery of the lid. Thisonehas the label of the J. D. & Louise Trabue Collection (a label that appears frequently on fine porcelain and Wedgwood in particular). The cup in this set has a tiny flake from the brown band near the lip of the cup (see photo) and a fleabite on theinside rim of the lid.The second pot de crème is also decorated en grisaillesin shades of brown and sepiaenamel with shaded scalloped bands enclosing a gilded wreath of what appear to be evergreen branches. The third pot de crème also enamel decorated in brown and sepia colorswithgarlands ofen grisaillesfloretsfurther enhanced with subtlemint green bands. The fourthpot de crème isthe most gaily colored with solid enamel borders oforange/pink enclosing wreaths of pink flowers and green foliage. This final cup has a relatively minor chip out of the inside of the foot (1/4\" x 1/8\" - see photo). I have not found any other notable flaws in these pieces but given that they are over 200 years old there may be tiny imperfections I have missed.
The colors of all these pieces are very harmonious and two have a \"U\" shaped mark that might be the mark of the painter. Each cover has a dot of the dominant color on theball finials. All the cups are marked \"WEDGWOOD\" Thepots de crèmeare all 3.5\" tall and2.5\" in diameter.
