CHIME CLOCK No. 73 –1921

For offer at below 2005 book value is thisbeautiful Seth Thomas Chime Clock No. 73 produced in the year of 1921. This old girl is made of solid and ribbonedmahogany. The case has been cleaned withmild clock cleaner and hand waxed to bring out the originalmahogany patina that has a slight crazing in the finish. The case has very few character marks thatshould be seen in the pictures. I lovethe lines on this old beauty. It has anold English design of two carved pillars and a broken arched top. The moldings around the base area are amazingand one of the grille work on the right side has been damaged at one point intime. The material in the grille isoriginal and slightly worn to let out the beautiful Westminster chimes. This is very large, heavy clock that has manygreat features like an original pendulum and a proper size one-sided key that camewith the clock will make a great conversation piece between your family, friends and guests.

Everything about this clock is big. The glass is incased by a mahogany archedframe door that spans nearly the whole front of the clock. The elegant design of the gold fancy pierced dialis the focal point of the old English design case. You can actually see yourself in the highly polishedgold background. This model is equippedwith a chime lock to prevent the chimes from rattling during transportation ofthis clock. The hammer tips are new tobring out the timbre and decay when the clock chimes. The back door opens and closes properly as itshould. The bottom shows a full modellabel of the clock. Sitting on my foyertable with for the past several months while keeping accurate time week afterweek and listening to the beautiful Mayland chime rods sound out theWestminster chime slowly on the quarter-hours has made this clock a realpleasure to have and a hard one to let go.

The original 6-inch silvered dial ring of the ChimeNo. 73 is in very good condition. Thelarge Arabic numbers are in great shape and visible from a distance. The signature Seth Thomas black fancy shapedserpentine hour and minute hands compliment the dial face giving it a classylook. The glass does not have any chipsor scratches in it and the wood cased door opens and closes properly as itshould. The key is one sided because theadjustments for the time and the silent chime is done manually and easily fromthe front of the clock. All aspects ofthis clock are fully functional.

The eight day Seth Thomas No. 113A Westminster movement is a whopping 5 ½ poundswith its original hold down screws which is not common to see on a clock thisold. The movement has been completelytaken apart, ultrasonically cleaned, all the pivots polished, all the wornpivot holes bushed, springs cleaned and the whole movement was properlylubricated. The three-train movement hasa self-adjusting lever that will automatically correct the chimes and hour strike(daylight savings time is a great example).Another clock I am selling that is fullyfunctional, wound every Sunday and not just bench tested but tested with theclock put together and working in my house over several weeks or months toassure that the clock will operate perfectly for the new owner and generationsto follow.

Each quarter-hour beautifully chimes on the fourMayland chime rods. The firstquarter-hour plays four notes. Eightnotes on the half hour. 12 notes on thethree-quarter hour, followed by 16 notes of the full Westminster chime sequence at the top of eachhour followed by the fifth rod struck to mark the hour. The Mayland chimes are by far the mostresonant and pleasing to the ear chime that I have ever heard. The regular Seth Thomas Westminster rods arenice, but these chimes are truly beautiful and the best sounding of any chimeclock.
