SFBJ Paris Character Doll- 15\"- Gypsy-circa 1910- Original with Box:
$235.00

SFBJ 15\" Gypsy Character Doll as found in her original box. Bisque head/Composition body. Netting material sleeves on blouse has deteriorated. The box is complete with label and packing paper but is in semi-intact condition. From my grandmother\'s items. Circa 1910. The mohair wig was removed to show the SFBJ marks and to be able to view inside the head to get a look at the sleep-eye mechanism. Otherwise than being removed for photographing the wig is in excellent condition and may be re-glued back into place. I have had inquiries asking to see photos of this doll undressed. No can do! I did need to explain that Character Dolls, as opposed to baby type dolls...were not manufactured to be dressed and undressed. Their character clothing is permanently affixed. Regarding the deteriorated netting sleeve material....that is correct. What remains of the sleeves is the deteriorated netting material and the gold braiding which is still intact at the cuffs as shown in photo #12. Here is some add\'l History on the Top 5 French Doll Mfgrs of this era which may help to clarify:

HISTORY: The Société Française de Fabrication de Bébés et Jouets (SFBJ) was formed in 1899, in response to the massive production of bisque dolls by German doll companies. The French companies found it difficult to compete with the German companies due to the cheaper costs of the German production. To try to fend off the German competition as long as possible, most of the great French doll companies, including Jumeau, Bru, Gaultier and others, joined to form one larger company known today as SFBJ. SFBJ is known for some very beautiful character dolls in the early 1900s. Additionally, a notable doll produced by SFBJ that is collected today is Bluette, a baby doll created for sewing and which had her own magazine, Semaine de Suzet. Bluette was much smaller than the Character Dolls.

This doll was shown to an Antique Show Doll expert for confirmation of the facts stated in my listing.
