The (Ship Order Telegraph – SOT) is alsoknown as the Annunciator.
It has twohandles, one on each side. One is 13”long and the other is 11” long. I guess the longer one is on the front but theycould be switched. It has two glassfaces about 12” in diameter. On one sidethe milk glass face has deteriorated and it looks like you can see intoit. The conditions are legible. Full, Half, Slow - Ahead, Stand By, Stop,Finished with Engine, Slow, Half, Full – Astern.
On the face of the glasses it says “Jos.Harper & Sons, New York, NJ, D-129-13”
The other glassis cracked but the white glass looks pretty good. (See pictures)
It is brass andstands 44” tall and is 7” thick with a 12” round base. It weighs approximately 100 pounds. It stillhas the chain coming out the bottom which would go down thru the ship’s deck tocontrol it. The bell is still inside andI heard it ring when I was moving it around to take the pictures.
I don’t thinkthis piece has ever been cleaned or polished.
They may be olderthan World War II as the Philadelphia shipyard was built shortly after WorldWar I.
