NATIVEGOLD AND IRON-STAINED QUARTZSPECIMENfrom SIERRA NEVADA MTNS. CALIFORNIARuler is 1/4\" wide (6 mm). U.S. 10 cent coin is 17 mm in diameter.Specimen weight:1.7Gram -26Grains Size: 11.7X10.4X6.9mmThis chunk of colorful, extremely-rich ore hails from the Mother Lode mines. If you know native gold in it\'s most organic, natural forms, you\'ll realize the value of this rock is not in the sum content of the gold. It\'sindividuality, rarity, and attractiveness makes this piece the prize that it is. A patina of \'blood\' or ironcap coats some of the under-lying, pink-tinted quartz. There\'s a fine showing of gold here and I guarantee it\'s The Real Mccoy.

SLIM PICKINS\'I viewedmyself as a successful prospector, but probably never found 200 oz of gold during my entire career. That would be worth the equivalent of quite a bit ofmoney today, but not back when I mined. In gold mining parlance, I know what constitutes \'hungry dirt\' because you would not believe how many worked-out claims I\'ve tested. But it\'s all good, you know. Attitude is everything. If you haven\'tdug your share of dry holes, you\'vemissed what prospecting\'s about.Having lived that life, the best parts for mewere the search, the sharing ofexperiences both good and bad, the camaraderie, the odd exceptional pay-streak,and sensing the excitement of others when you show them where to find gold and then they do.
TRINITY COUNTY, CALIFORNIA

Sometimes called THE FATHER LODE, the extensive placer gold deposits of Trinity County, California were exploited by white minersback inthe mid1800s. Eons before the 49ers arrived, erosional forceslaid downgold-bearing sediments ona monumental scale. These ancientlakes and riverbeds were subsequentlycut into byrunning water. This down-cuttingcreated sloping and vertical terrain inwhich elevatedcomponents of the olddeposits are left intact.Though now mostlywashed downby the\'Giants\' (hydraulic cannons), these remnantformations were tackled savagely by early miners. Afterwards, a whole succession of saltyfollowers descended upon the region seeking their fortunes. They chewed up the gold-bearing formations and spat them back out again off the ends of their wooden sluice-boxes. If you want to see what remains from one of these early operations, check out the LA GRANGE MINE on Oregon summita few miles west of Weaverville on infamous highway 299. Here can be found dramatic historical evidence of hydraulic mining.

Mountains of boulders and hundreds of old mining\'cuts\'attest to early efforts to extract gold from ancient gravel deposits. The operators of these mines, in many cases, were our forefathers.Towns sprang up too. The vestiges of a civil, polite societygrew out of these gnarly roots of humanity.Rich gravel depositswere blasted downover a territorialquadrant

encompassing much of Trinity County. Onan equallymassive scale,bucket-line dredgeschurnedup creeks and tore throughriver-bottoms to grab the precious metal found near bedrock. Squeezed in (or squeezed out) amongst larger operationswere uncountableminions ofsmall-scale,independent miners. They came rushing in from the four corners of the globe, every cut and color, with picks,

shovels, rockers, gold pans, and \'longtoms\'.In time, miners discoveredthat \"while poor men work, the rich man keeps all the gold\". Merchants, saloon-keeps, freighters, painted ladies, and resourceful swindlers thrived. A fewhardy argonauts might havestruck it rich, but only a handful, I\'m sure. A lot of them made a subsistence living, though probably not much of one considering the cost of goods and services. What a colorful era it most surely was. Now, with today\'s booming gold prices, look for a whole new breed ofadventure-seeker and fortune hunter to head for the hills. You might as well try your hand. Who knows, you might get lucky and find something bigger than\'frogs hair\'.
