Offered here is a fantastic Civil War document. It is a muster roll for Company G of the11th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry (the \"Boston Volunteers\"), a regiment that saw hard service from First Bull Run through Appomattox. This muster roll covers the company\'s returns from August 31 through October 31, 1863, which covers the post-Gettysburg summer into the Bristoe Campaign in the fall. Every man\'s name, rank, and present disposition are listed.
In the roll, which measures 21\" x 31\", Captain William C. Allen reports just 41 men present for duty, with another 22 reported sick or under arrest. Several soldiers are listed as having deserted or being away sick. Others returned from desertion. Many have notes against their accounts for lost equipment. The muster roll is certified and signed byCaptain Allen and LtColonel Porter D. Tripp, commanding the regiment. The company\'s \"discipline,\" \"instruction,\" \"military appearance,\" \"arms,\" \"accoutrements,\" and \"clothing\" are all judged to be \"good.\"
On the lower reverse side is aspace where commanding officers are invited to record details of recent events. The officer used the space to recount the regiment\'s campaign in the fall of 1863 leading up to the Battle of Bristoe Station:
Sept 15 left camp near Beverlys Ford crossed the Rappahannock at Freemans Ford Sept 16th and marched to near Culpepper. Remained encamped near Culpepper untill Oct 8th when theRegt started on areconnaissance to near James City. Came back to Culpepper Oct 11th and marched to the Rappahannock crossed the river at Freemans Ford and marched via Auburn, Greenwich, Manassas Junction and Centreville to Union Mills, where we arrived October 13th. Left Union Mills Oct 19th and marched via Bristoe Station, Greenwich, and Auburn to near Catletts Station where we arrived Oct 21st. Left camp near Catletts Station Oct 30th andmarched about two milesbeyond Warranton Junction where we were mustered Oct 31st
The muster roll is in good condition. Handwriting is medium-dark and clear--very easy to read. The paper is in excellent sturdy condition, not stiff, and not particularly delicate at most folds, although there is a long tear along the horizontal center fold that extends to about the center of the document and a couple other delicate vertical folds. There are various other edge tears at several folds, but none serious. The muster roll safely folds down into a convenient 4\" x 10.5\" size as shown in the photos.
The roll was purchased from the estate of the late Norm Flayderman, who is well known as having been the authority on Antique American firearms. The archive from which the document came belonged to Thomas H. Dunham, who had started the war as a private in the 11th Massachusetts, worked on brigade and division staffs after being wounded at Chancellorsville and the Wilderness, and finished the war as Colonel of the 11th (he earned a brevet brigadier\'s commission for his service).
