Mathurin Moreau was born in Dijon on the 18th of November1822. He died in Paris, February 14th. Mathurin Moreau was an expert atportraying feminine grace. He sculpted figures, genre scenes and allegorieswith an amiable and lighthearted realism. He was the son and the student of thefamous painter and sculptor Jean-Baptiste Moreau, the father of three highlyreputed sculptors, Mathurin, Hippolyte and Auguste Moreau. Mathurin Moreauentered the School of Beaux Arts in Paris in 1841 and studied under thedirection of Ramey and Dumont. He won the second price of Rome in 1842. In 1848he showed his work for the first time in the Salon, where he obtained a numberof distinctions. Around 1850 he worked for the foundry of Val d’Osne, creatinga number of models for statues destined to be cast in iron. In later years hebecame one of the foundry’s administrators.
Mathurin Moreau’s work includes some commemorativemonuments, tombs, a number of statues and busts of personalities, and someornamental sculptures. He worked for the churches of Saint-Augustin and of theTrinité, for the Opera, the Palais de Justice, the City Hall, the Tuileries andmore impressive sites in Paris. His work also includes a large quantity ofstatues, statuettes and groups in pleasant decorative themes, which were quitesuccessful in their time.
The majority of these works and many others never exhibited at the Salon, havebeen cast in bronze by different founders, as evidenced by pieces appearing onthe market and in Museums.
