Singapore POW Pacific Star & Efficiency medal group:

A Singapore Prisoner of War group of medals consisting of The 1939-45 Star, Pacific Star, 1939-45 War Medal & Army Council medal slip showing that 3 medals were awarded (these contained in the original Royal Artillery box of posting which is addressed to: Mr.H.E.Barnes, 103 Heming Way, Blackpool, Lancs).

Plus his Territorial Efficiency Medal which is correctly impressed to: 902454 BDR. H. E. BARNES, R.A. which is contained in the original card box of issue.

Lance Sergeant Herbert Ernest Barnes was made Prisoner of War by The Imperial Japanese Army on 15th February 1942 at the Fall of Singapore.

He survived the War & I have a copy of his Prisoner of War questionnaire which he completed at the time of his liberation. It shows that he was held at the following POW camps:

Changi, Singapore - from February 1942 to June 1942,

Ban Pong, Thailand - from June 1942 to July 1942,

Nong Pladuk, Thailand - from July 1942 to September 1944,

River Valley, Singapore - from September 1944 to February 1945,

D????, Saigon, French Indo China - February 1945,

Long Than, French Indo China - February to April 1945,

Lieng Khan, French Indo China May to July 1945,

Saigon - August 1945.

The questionnaire also gives the Camp Leaders at the time & interestingly, one of the camp leaders at Nong Pladuk during the period July 1942 to September 1944 was Lieutenant Colonel Philip Toosey who was later depicted by Alec Guinness in the feature film Bridge on the River Kwai. I believe Lt.Colonel Toosey arrived at Nong Pladuk after the bridges had been completed.

All of the medals are in excellent condition. They have undoubtedly never been worn.

Also included is a Royal Artillery cap badge which came along with the medals when I purchased them.

A very very hard earned set of medals.
