About this Item:

Sixth-Plate Ambrotype (1855 - 1865), 19th century portrait, vintage case, 2.75 x 3.25. Developed in 1851 by Frederick Scott Archer,ambrotype, oramphitype, hails from the Greek words "immortal" and "impression." These images were impressed on glass through a variant of the wet platecollodionprocess. They required shorter exposure times than daguerreotypesand were more affordable to manufacture, two factors which contributed to their rise in popularity before the advent of the carte devisitein the early1860s.

Enclosed within this embellished case isa 19th century portrait, featuring a stunningly crisp image of a young man in a hat, jacket and vest, framed by an ornate gold frame. The interior of the front cover boasts tan velvet lining, remains intact at the hinge, and bears the original latch.

In fine condition, with some moderate wear to the front panel of the case.
