The value of slaves for a widow

1 pg. document, February 3, 1823, Madison County [Kentucky]that allots (values) four named slaves toward the Dowry of Eliza Clayton.Signed by three court appointed persons-- Silas Tribble, William Wells, andJohn Wheeler-- to value the slaves. Docketed and signed on the reverse by DavidIrvine (as Clerk of the County Court). The document reads, in part: \"Inconformity to order of the County Court of Madison awarded at their July term1822 appointing the undersigned to allot Eliza Clayton widow of John ClaytonDecd. her Dowry [we] met on the 30th Oct, 1822 at the late Dwelling of saiddecedent... [and] allotted the widow her Dowry of the negroes according totheir real value and their annual value. We allotted the said widow a negro mannamed Harry at $800, a negro woman named Rachel at $500, a negro girl namedMargaret at $200, and a negro girl named Eliza at $400 making $1,920 whichleaves a balance of $133.33 behind of said widow\'s dowry of the negroes,etc....\" David Irvine (1796-1872), who dockets and signs the reverse sideof this document, was the son of Colonel William Irvine. The Colonel came toKentucky from Virginia when a young man and served in a Kentucky Regiment inthe War of 1812. The Colonel served in the Kentucky legislature and was thepresident of the Constitutional convention that made Kentucky a state. He wasalso the first clerk of both the County and Circuit Courts of Madison County,KY. David Irvine, who was serving as deputy under his father, succeeded hisfather as Circuit and County clerk upon his death, serving until 1847. He tooserved in the War of 1812, although still in his early teens. He and hisbrothers served in the Maumee campaign and his brother, Christopher Irvine, waskilled at the battle of Maumee. David served in both the Kentucky House ofReps. and the Kentucky Senate. He died at Richmond, KY at age 76. David\'ssister-in-law was the sister of Cassius M. Clay and the daughter of GeneralGreen Clay. His son-in-law was General Addison White of Huntsville, Ala.. Thedocument is irregularly cut, but complete and in very good condition.
